Do you have a little princess in your life that loves to dress up? Or do you have a little girl that YOU like to dress up? (I fall into the latter category) Then this tutu skirt is a great project for you! It’s pretty simple and can be done during one or two nap times.
Here is what you need to get started:
- Elastic or ribbon (I think ribbon is easier to work with)
- Tulle (2-5 yards depending on the size and length of your skirt)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
To start, measure around your daughter’s waist. If you are using ribbon add about 18 extra inches. That will give you nine inches on either side to tie the bow when you are done.
If you are using elastic subtract an inch from the waist measurement and sew the ends together.
Next you cut your tulle into strips. This is pretty forgiving and doesn’t have to be exact. I chose to do 3 inch wide strips.
Then figure out how long you want your tutu skirt to be. I wanted mine to be about 10 inches long. So you’ll want to double the length and add an inch and then cut your strips accordingly.
Next take two strips and line the ends up together.
Fold the two strips in half making a loop.
Loop the tulle over your ribbon or elastic.
Thread both ends of the tulle through the loop.
Then pull the ribbon tight. I used a hanger to keep the first couple in place.
Continue the same process all around the elastic or ribbon.
When you are done it looks a little something like this!
If you are using a ribbon stop about nine inches from each end. Then you can tie it in the back.
This skirt was for my daughter’s first birthday. It was quick and simple, and I loved how it turned out. I hope you enjoy making your skirt for the little princess in your life!
