My two boys recently decided *ahem* two years ago *ahem* (yes, it has been that long of a final product) that they wanted to move into the same room together. That meant we could have a playroom! Or, what I ultimately envisioned for this room, music themed playroom/guestroom. Even better! So, here we go. Transformation time.
Playroom Makeover
This room had not changed much since we moved in the summer of 2012. The walls were a beige color, dark wood trim & door, original, builder-grade windows, an old chipped fan, and accordion doors on the closets. Had. To. Go.
Before:
*Disclaimer: somehow my original room pics got lost in the abyss of my old computer, so digging around to find some through family pics was tricky. Therefore, several with my kiddo(s) is what it has to be – though I don’t mind.
To start the playroom makeover, I scheduled to have our old, original windows replaced with Pella wood frame triple pane storm windows with blackout shades built in *L.O.V.E.*
Windows before:
Windows after:
After the windows were done, I sanded down some dented & scraped areas of the baseboards & window nook.
Next came primer- I started with the wood, doors & trim were primed with Valspar High-Hiding Primer using a smooth cabinet/doors foam roller.
I painted the walls using Pure White paint/primer in one by BEHR because I wanted it to be a basic backdrop for the accents of color that I wanted to stand out later. I also used this as the final coat over the baseboards and window seals to match the rest of the house.
Though I do not have a pic of the ‘before’ fan, I did replace the old faux dark wood & gold fan with a simple, white fan, as can be seen in the above pic. We also replaced all the hardware from the original tan lights and plugs to plain white.
I really do not like accordion doors, so off they went & replaced them with solid white curtain panels from Target on tension rods inside the closet frames.

Finally, to add the decor and function to the room.
The color scheme came from the IKEA rug I fell in love with. Sadly, they no longer carry the tall pile rug. (they do sell a low pile version with some different colors HERE)
The art center, with homemade artwork from the husband (the pic of my dad and I when I was little) and from my boys on the wall.
The IKEA knob shelf slides to create the desired widths between each, or knobs can be removed to create an even more custom unit. Ours holds buckets of pencils, glue, tape, & erasers.
The yellow IKEA chair pulls out into a single bed for guests. (Here is the double version they currently offer.)
The bookshelf holds four shelves of books, categorized by my 8-year-old, and the bottom four shelves are instruments and art supplies.
And, finally, my favorite part of the playroom, the musical pics. Two vinyl album covers of the two bands my dad was a part of, and pics of my three guys and a favorite Paul Simon lyric.
This room gets a lot of use, love, and time spent creating, practicing banjos and ukuleles, and slumber parties. Just as I hoped!
Love this playroom makeover? Pin it for later!
