American Buttercream Frosting Recipe

Here are the (simple!) things you’ll need!

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Electric mixer

American Buttercream Frosting Recipe Ingredients

  • 1 stick unsalted room temperature butter
  • 1/2 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (good quality vanilla extract is a major plus!)
  • 1-2 tbsp heavy cream, milk, or coffee creamer

frosting ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cream the Butter and Shortening:creamed butter from American buttercream frosting recipe

    • Using the paddle attachment on your electric mixer*, combine the unsalted butter and vegetable shortening in a mixing bowl or bowl of a stand mixer. Beat them together on medium speed until the mixture is smooth and creamy. (You can start on low speed until the mixture starts to combine.)
    • This combination of butter and shortening creates the perfect base for your frosting, providing both flavor and stability.
    • *If you don’t have a stand mixer with different attachments, no worries, an electric hand mixer will work just fine!
  2. Add Sugar and Vanilla:ingredients for American Buttercream Frosting Recipe

    • Gradually add the powdered sugar to the bowl. Add the vanilla extract and 1 tablespoon of your chosen liquid (heavy cream, milk, or coffee creamer).
    • Mix on medium speed until the ingredients are well incorporated. The paddle attachment helps mix the ingredients thoroughly, ensuring a consistent texture without incorporating too much air.
  3. Incorporate More Liquid and Whip:whipped frosting

    • Switch to the whisk attachment. Add an additional tablespoon of liquid to the mixture. The whisk attachment is ideal for adding volume and creating a light, fluffy texture.
    • Increase the mixer speed to high and continue mixing for 3-5 minutes. This step is crucial for achieving the perfect buttercream. Mixing on high speed helps incorporate air, which makes the frosting light and airy, but be careful not to overmix, as it can create unwanted air bubbles.
  4. Adjust Consistency:frosting on a spatula

    • Check the consistency of your buttercream. If it isn’t silky and smooth, add the final 1/2 tablespoon of liquid. Mix again on medium speed until you reach the desired consistency. The frosting should be smooth and spreadable, perfect for decorating cakes and cupcakes.

Yield

  • This recipe makes approximately 3 cups of frosting.

Adding Different Flavors to American Buttercream

One of the best aspects of American Buttercream is its versatility. By simply adding a few ingredients, you can create a variety of flavors to suit any taste. Here are some ideas for enhancing your buttercream:

  1. Chocolate Buttercream:

    • Add 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder to the powdered sugar before mixing. You may need to add a bit more liquid to reach the desired consistency. (Don’t forget to sprinkle a few chocolate chips on top of your chocolate cake  to really take things over the edge!)
  2. Lemon Buttercream:

    • Replace the vanilla extract with 1-2 teaspoons of lemon extract and add 1-2 teaspoons of fresh lemon zest for a zesty, refreshing flavor.
  3. Strawberry Buttercream:

    • Add 1/4 cup of strawberry puree or 2-3 tablespoons of strawberry jam. You can also use strawberry extract for a more intense flavor. Adjust the liquid accordingly to maintain the desired consistency.
  4. Mint Buttercream:

    • Replace the vanilla extract with 1 teaspoon of mint extract. For a more festive look, add a few drops of green food coloring.
  5. Coffee Buttercream:

    • Dissolve 1-2 tablespoons of instant coffee or espresso powder in 1 tablespoon of hot water, then add it to the buttercream mixture along with the liquid.
  6. Almond Buttercream:

    • Replace the vanilla extract with 1 teaspoon of almond extract for a nutty, aromatic flavor.
  7. Caramel Buttercream:

    • Add 1/4 cup of caramel sauce to the mixture. Ensure the caramel is at room temperature to prevent it from affecting the buttercream’s consistency.
  8. Coconut Buttercream:

    • Replace the milk or cream with coconut milk, and add 1 teaspoon of coconut extract. You can also fold in some shredded coconut for added texture.
  9. Peanut Butter Buttercream:

    • Add 1/2 cup of smooth peanut butter to the buttercream mixture. You may need to adjust the liquid to maintain the right consistency.

Experimenting with these flavors can help you create a personalized touch for your baked goods. Adjust the quantities to suit your personal preference, and enjoy the endless possibilities of this classic frosting whether you are making wedding cakes, a chocolate layer cake, or  sugar cookies with a homemade frosting layer on top!

  2. Refrigeration:

    • If you plan to use the buttercream within a week, store it in the refrigerator. When you’re ready to use it, let it come to room temperature and re-whip it for a few minutes to restore its creamy texture.
  3. Freezing:

    • For longer storage, you can freeze the buttercream. Place it in an airtight container and store it in the freezer for up to three months. When you need it, thaw the buttercream in the refrigerator overnight, then bring it to room temperature and re-whip before using.
