Making good homemade mashed potatoes might seem daunting but it is completely doable! Once you have these homemade mashed potatoes you will never want box potatoes again. This is a recipe that will definitely please a crowd and you will make over and over again!
Best Mashed Potatoes Ever
The amount of ingredients you need all depends on how many pounds of potatoes you are making. I’ve included three different size options:
Option 1: Serves around 6 people
- 2.5 lbs. white potatoes
- 1 (8 oz.) cream cheese
- 1 stick of butter ( I like Parkay brand)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Options 2: Serves around 10 people
- 5 lbs. of white potatoes
- 1 (8 oz.) cream cheese
- 2 sticks of butter (I like Parkay brand)
- 1 tablespoon of milk
- More salt and pepper
Option 3: Serves 15 people
- 10 lbs. of white potatoes
- 2 (8 oz.) cream cheese blocks
- 2 sticks of butter (I like Parkay brand)
- ¼ cup of milk
- Lots of salt and pepper
1. Peel the potatoes. This is the only part that takes a while. Peel all the skins off the potatoes and chop into chunks. I have a large pot with some water already in it that I put all the chunks directly into.
2. Cover the pot with a lid and put on high heat until a rolling boil develops.
3. Uncover the pot and reduce heat to medium. Cook until the potatoes are tender. Meaning you can take a fork and easily stab them. About 15 – 20 mins. Once tender drain off the excess water. The picture below shows how they are soft enough I could stab them with a fork.
4. Add the butter and cream cheese to a large bowl.
5. Add the potatoes, milk (if you are doing a large batch), salt and pepper to the bowl and mix with a mixer until soft.
That’s it!!! These mashed potatoes are great for the holidays, a large gathering or just a weeknight at home! I hope you enjoy them as much as we do!!!

I love mashed potatoes! I've never tried putting cream cheese into it though--will have to try that out next time!
