Have you caught the Doctor Who fever? The show has become wildly popular lately, and for good reason. It’s funny, it has heart, and it’s perfect for binge watching. Unfortunately, the show is currently between seasons, and the past seasons have recently been removed from Netflix! What’s a Whovian to do? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a list of shows to fill that Tardis shaped hole in your life. And bonus: they’re all (currently) available to stream on Netflix! Here’s what to watch after you finish Doctor Who:
Torchwood
Are you a fan of Captain Jack Harkness? Then you’ll be happy to know he stars in this spinoff series. You may remember hearing the group Torchwood mentioned in Doctor Who episodes. The show features Captain Jack and a team of investigators that look into unexplainable events, and meet some interesting aliens. It almost feels like a cross between Doctor Who and The X Files, with plenty of British wit.
Broadchurch (Season 1 and 2)
Did you find yourself missing the tenth doctor after his regeneration? If so, you should look into this BBC series featuring David Tennant. Tennant stars as a detective trying to solve the murder of a young boy in the small village of Broadchurch. It’s not as lighthearted as Doctor Who, but it is a very well produced crime drama, full of raw emotion and excellent acting. The first season kept me guessing until the last episode, and I was thrilled when Netflix recently added the second season. Both seasons are definitely worth watching.
Jessica Jones
If you still haven’t had enough David Tennant (and who has?), you should try the Netflix original series Jessica Jones. The show is based on the Marvel Comics character Jessica Jones, a woman with superpowers that works as a private investigator. David Tennant plays the villainous “Purple Man”. This character is definitely a far cry from his character as the Doctor, but Tennant plays the role well. The series has much darker and heavier themes than most Doctor Who episodes, but it has the same action packed feel that many fans will appreciate.
Sherlock
If you haven’t yet watched this juggernaut of a BBC show, now is the time. You may recognize series creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss as two well known writers for Doctor Who. The show stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson and is set in modern day London. Seasons are only three episodes long, but each episode is 90 minutes. The superb writing and acting make this show a must watch for Doctor Who fans, even if you’ve never had much interest in previous iterations of Sherlock Holmes.
Firefly
This Joss Whedon series has developed a cult following, despite being cancelled after only one season. While it may not have any actors or writers in common with Doctor Who, it seems like the type of show that most Whovians would appreciate. The series follows a ragtag group of travelers on a spaceship in the future; a future which resembles the Old West. It sounds like a strange premise for a show, but there’s a reason the fandom has held strong for so many years. It’s a fun show, and well worth watching for anyone that enjoys a clever fantasy series.
Hopefully some of these shows will help tide you over until the new season of Doctor Who. Can you think of any more good shows to watch? Be sure and leave a comment with your suggestions. Allons-y!
