Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore, written by Robin Sloan, was an absolute delight to read. It brings in the excitement and potential of technology while still invoking the nostalgic love of paper to hand. It is a little bit fantasy, a little bit mystery, and a lot bit awesome.
Jobless after a recession, Clay Jannon finds himself working behind the peculiar counter of Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. The quirky clientele are few and far between, and they never buy anything. They only check out weird and obscure books from the mysterious “way back shelf.” Curiosity peaked, Clay eventually discovers that the bookstore’s secrets are much bigger than her very tall walls.
Penumbra came into my life at the perfect time. I had been reading some pretty intense stuff lately and really needed a break. This book is not groundbreaking nor will it stand the test of time. However, it is a fun and enjoyable read that will leave you with good feelings. I would say it is a little bit Where’d You Go Bernadette meets Ready Player One. Take this with you for vacation or to read over Thanksgiving break when you need to escape your family. Not that I would ever do such a thing. My family are all gems, much like this book.
